Hyundai Department Store Apkujung Branch Valet Lounge and Canopy
2024-2025
This project creates a valet lounge for VIP guests at Hyundai Department Store’s Apkujung branch, first opened in 1985. Rather than disturbing the aura of the stone-clad landmark, we sought to introduce an elegant structure that could appear as a quiet gesture of hospitality. A canopy of pure white—vast in span yet carried by filaments so slender they seem to vanish—captures the subtle nuances expected of this threshold. Concealed within the pristine plane, custom-cut steel beams tap into the slightest tolerance of the existing frame, enabling the canopy to hover into place with remarkable speed, even as the store remained alive with shoppers.
